A testimonial letter is a formal letter in which someone who knows a person vouches for their character, skills, or work, usually to support a job, school, or scholarship application. A good one runs three or four short paragraphs: how the writer knows the person, one or two specific achievements with numbers, and a clear recommendation, signed with the writer's name, title, and contact details.

Testimonial letter vs customer testimonial

They share a name but do different jobs. A testimonial letter is a document about a person, written for a specific reader such as an employer or admissions committee. A customer testimonial is two to four sentences about a product or service, published on a business's website. If you have been asked for the second kind, see how to write a testimonial, which has a template and 10 examples.

Testimonial letter for a student

From a teacher, for a university, scholarship, or program application.

Dear Admissions Committee,

I taught Ana Silva in advanced chemistry for two years at
Westbrook High School. She started the course with a C and
finished with the highest mark in a class of 28.

Ana stayed after lessons to work through every problem she
got wrong, and she tutored three classmates who were
struggling. She is curious, persistent, and generous.

I recommend her without reservation for your program.

Sincerely,
[Name], Chemistry Teacher, Westbrook High School

Testimonial letter for an employee

From a manager, for a new job or an internal promotion.

To whom it may concern,

Marcus Reed worked on my team at Harbor & Co from 2022 to
2026, first as a junior account manager and then as a senior
account manager.

Within 18 months he was running our five largest accounts,
and he raised renewals on his book from 81% to 94%. He is
reliable, calm under pressure, and the person new hires go
to for help.

I would rehire him without hesitation.

Regards,

Character reference letter for a job application

From someone who knows the applicant outside work: a mentor, volunteer lead, or long-term acquaintance.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I have known Leah Grant for six years through the Eastside
Food Bank, where I coordinate volunteers and she has led our
Saturday distribution team since 2022.

Leah organises 20 volunteers every week, has never missed a
shift without arranging cover, and handles difficult
situations with patience and good judgment.

She would be a trustworthy, dependable addition to your team.

Sincerely,
[Name], Volunteer Coordinator, Eastside Food Bank

Testimonial letter for a business or service provider

From a client, for a vendor to use in proposals or on their website.

To whom it may concern,

Northgate Studio rebuilt our company website in 2026 after
two earlier attempts with other agencies had failed.

They launched on time and on budget, and our demo requests
rose from 30 to 70 a month within one quarter. Their weekly
updates meant we never had to chase them.

We have since hired them for two more projects and recommend
them to any team that needs a site that converts.

Regards,

What every testimonial letter needs

  1. How you know them, and for how long.
  2. One or two specific achievements, with a number where you have one.
  3. Two or three qualities, each backed by what you saw them do.
  4. A clear recommendation in the final line.
  5. Your name, title, and contact details, so the reader can verify it.

Keep it to one page. A specific 100-word letter carries more weight than a vague 500-word one.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a testimonial letter?

A testimonial letter is a formal letter in which someone vouches for a person's character, skills, or work, usually to support a job, school, or scholarship application. A client can also write one for a business to use in proposals.

2. How long should a testimonial letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs, 75 to 200 words, on one page. Cover how you know the person, one or two specific achievements, and a clear recommendation, then sign with your name, title, and contact details.

3. Is a testimonial letter the same as a reference letter?

They are close. A reference letter is written on request for a specific application and is often sent directly to the employer. A testimonial letter is more general, addressed “to whom it may concern”, and given to the person to use as they need.
